Ana Paula, senior associate of the Litigation Department, has more than ten years of experience in advising the main multinational and national businesses operating in the country. She is highly regarded for her experience in handling complex negotiations, lawsuits and domestic and international arbitrations related to civil and commercial matters and has vast experience in disputes related to product liability and alleged consumer law violations. Her practice also includes advising on civil and commercial contracts and transactions, as well as pre-dispute advise.
She also advises on international law matters of which she has been an assistant professor of Private International Law at the “Universidad de la República” for more than 8 years and is a current member of the Private International Law American Association (ASADIP).
Ana Paula completed a postgraduate course at the “Universidad of Montevideo” of Civil Procedure, and is currently finishing a Master´s Degree in Civil Law, with emphasis in Contractual Law, at the Catholic University of Uruguay.
She has been recognized by international publications such as “Chambers & Partners” and “Legal 500” for her performance in litigation and arbitration. Also, she has been nominated by Euromoney as “Best Litigator in Latin America” at the Women in Business Law Awards 2018.
She actively participates in the Firm’s Women´s Committee, which provides a platform for women attorneys at all phases of their careers to engage in professional training, mentoring and business development. She also participates in issues related to gender diversity and entrepreneurship being member of the Organization of Businesswomen of Uruguay (OMEU).
She leads and participates in diverse pro-bono projects, being since 2013 President of the Financial Board of the National Association for the Welfare of the Elderly (“Movimiento Nacional por el Bienestar del Anciano”), that promotes and organizes initiatives that aim to help the disadvantaged elderly in Uruguay. During 2017, she leaded a project for NGO Fair Trials International in cooperation with Trust Law (the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono legal programme), with the participation of a Fair Trials representative. Such project required the Firm to issue a comprehensive report about its local legal system to help people understand and defend their rights to avoid unfair trials and unfair results. This project was nominated for the Collaboration Award at the “TrustLaw Awards 2018”. The “Collaboration Award” recognizes highly effective working relationships between legal teams, NGOs and social enterprises that have dramatically increased the potential impact of projects as a result.
She coaches and mentors younger associates at the Firm, playing a significant role in their development within the Litigation Department.
Actively advises CODERE MÉXICO, a renowned multinational in the private gaming sector, and has successfully participated in the defense of CODERE in an extremely challenging dispute brought by Sikeston, a minority shareholder, involving an amount of USD 23.9 million. Codere and Sikeston are shareholders of CARRASCO NOBILE (CN), a company that holds the concession of Hotel Casino Carrasco, a member of Sofitel Hotels. Currently advises CODERE MEXICO in an arbitration initiated by Sikeston before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Under Ana Paula´s leadership a USD 1.5 million suit was totally dismissed by the Appellate Court against Quest Capital Advisers Agente de Valores (a stock broker) and Andorra Banc Agricol Reig S.A., brought by an investor claiming compensation driven from the alleged wrongful sale of Argentinean Defaulted Bonds
Lead the litigation team that effectively assists BASF (its local branch and the international company) in a contractual dispute brought by a regional distributor in 2017 that claimed almost USD 20 million.
Regularly advises Desarrollo y Gestión S.A. (a private equity firm), and played a major role in achieving dismissal of the 1 million suit brought by an investor claiming damages allegedly produced by the transfer and demolition at the resort Esturion de Montoya, in Punta del Este.
