Latin Lawyer
2006

Probably the most established corporate firm in Montevideo, blending tradition and experience with a modern approach – notably through substantial investment in leading-edge technology.

PRACTICES & PEOPLE

Nicolás Herrera remains the firm’s most prominent name, alongside Álvaro Tarabal, with regular mentions for Nicolás Piaggio, who joined the partnership in 2005 along with Diego Licio. Like most firms in Montevideo, Guyer also employs a number of notaries and accountants, making it a considerably bigger organisation than the lawyer numbers suggest. In comparison to the other Uruguayan firms on this list, a notably high proportion of Guyer’s lawyers have worked or studied abroad.

CLIENTS

An impressive client list heavy with banking and multinational corporate names. One important banking client described Guyer’s lawyers as outstanding professionals, who understand our business and our legal environment.

ALLIANCES & NETWORK

The firm is a member of the Club de Abogados, the Lex Mundi network and Multilaw.

2005 DEVELOPMENTS

2005 notably saw the firm advising public works concessionaire Grinor SA and trustee Banco Bilbao in the establishment of Uruguay’s first ever trust for the financing of public works; advising the underwriters in a US$ 500 million bond issue by the Republic of Uruguay; advising Service Corporation International (SCI) in the sale of its Argentine and Uruguayan cemetery subsidiaries to an Argentine-Chilean investor group, advising Uruguayan investment partnership Prospéritas Capital Partners SRL (PCP) in the creation of the first venture capital fund focused on Uruguayan equity investments, while the firm also represented lenders and underwriters in a series of loans and financings and advised on two major acquisitions in the oil & gas sector. The labour department was kept busy representing Uruguay’s financial institutions in wage negotiations, while the litigation department successfully defended the Republic of Argentina against a suit in Uruguay brought in Uruguay by a bondholder.
